HVC is a pioneering company responsible for waste management. Today that means managing flows of resources and one of them is energy. Located in the Boekelermeer polder in Alkmaar, the company's energy plant has over time expanded from a single waste burner to a maze-like complex which now asks for a new addition; a sludge drying installation, which upgrades the sludge waste from sewerage treatment plants to biofuel as addition in the waste to energy process.  VE-R was assigned for the spatial design of this installation and the supplementary spaces, but also to do a study of the whole terrain for the improvement of internal logistics and the facilitation of material flows inside and around the HVC complex, aiming for a more flexible use of the spaces available in the future and a more effective and less costly circulation of materials.
